Appropriate for beginning managers. A decent refresher for more experienced managers, but those with more experience should consider something more advanced. The course had good advice and examples of how to handle difficult conversations. It was easy to read and follow. The topics are probably a better fit for a classroom environment, but overall I thought it was effective.

As the co-author of this course, I have been asked many times: "Why do I need to study Communication? I already Communicate every day." While it is true that Communication is a natural part of our everydaylives, there is room for improvement. The goal of this course is to help you to become a more effective communicator. How does this course differ from all the other Communication courses and workshops that are available to professionals? The difference is the distinction between single loop and double loop learning (See the work of Chris Argyris.). Many Communication courses and consultants give you "tips." They tell you WHAT to do and HOW to do it. But they stay within current modes of thinking. This is what is called single loop learning. Our course, "That's Not What I Said! Effective Workplace Communication," is built around double loop learning. Our course is theory-based, meaning that you will learn to diagnose communication situations, leading you to know WHY, WHAT, and HOW. Our course also equips you to think outside of the box and to come up with alternative solutions. Let's take an analogy. Think about your lawnmower when it won't start. If you know something about the principles of a small engine, then you have a better chance of diagnosing the problem and fixing the problem. You also can move outside of current thinking and explore other options. For example, perhaps you could put in alternative landscaping and do away with cutting the lawn altogether. So, "That's Not What I Said!--Effective Workplace Communication" teaches you the latest and best models and theories of communication, so that you can diagnose and fix problems. We do not simply want to TRAIN you to perform a communication transaction. We want to equip you to think, to evaluate, and to create solutions.
